John Singleton’s depiction of social issues in ghetto Los Angeles appears as a story of three companions growing up together ‘in the ‘hood.’ Half-siblings Doughboy and Ricky Baker are foils for one another’s character, introducing totally different ways to deal with the extreme lives they face. Ricky is the ‘All-American’ competitor, hoping to win a football grant to USC and looks for salvation through sports, while ‘Batter’ surrenders to the viciousness, liquor, and wrongdoing encompassing him in his current circumstance, yet keeps serious areas of strength for an of pride and code of honor. Between these two is their companion Tre, who is fortunate to have a dad, ‘Irate’ Styles, to help him to have the strength of character to make the right decision and to constantly get a sense of ownership with his activities.
