The jobless Cindy Campbell is employed to work in a reviled house as guardian of an old woman and meets the phantom of a kid. In the interim, the teen child Robbie and the youthful little girl Rachel of his nearby neighbor and crane administrator Tom Ryan are enjoying the end of the week with their failed father. Cindy and Tom meet and become hopelessly enamored with one another, however when Giant Tripods attack Earth, Tom escapes with Robbie and Rachel; Cindy goes to a town, attempting to track down the solution to a puzzle to save the world; and the leader of USA sorts out the guard of the planet in UN under his knowledge and administration.
